Janet L. Matthews asked:
Anyone who has been overweight will know only too well that the effort required to lose that weight, be it 7lb or 7 stone, is immense. In fact it is hard to understand why, having made that effort to successfully lose weight on one occasion, many people allow the weight to creep back on again so that they have to make that enormous effort yet again.
There are of course many reasons why people are overweight, from metabolic differences to stress and unhappiness, but somehow being overweight seems to me to be adding to those problems not making them any better. I am then reminded that weight loss is a complex issue.
In order to even begin on a weight loss program, the majority of people need a motivational factor, a reason to do it. A special event can often be a catalyst, or maybe the forthcoming summer and the prospect of wearing beachwear maybe a good enough reason. However it would appear that even these incentives are not enough for some people and it takes something as drastic as a serious illness for them to take heed of their wake up call.
In this day and age life expectancy has risen dramatically with many of us expected to live well into our 80s and 90s. Surely it would be beneficial to all of us to be fit and healthy in our old age. With the best will in the world we are unlikely to be fit and healthy if we are even moderately obese or overweight, as it is now well documented that excess weight will eventually bring with it diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, not to mention the complications that can arise from arthritis and other joint related problems.
Research has shown that there is a link between obesity and depression. Although it may appear on the surface that depression is caused obesity itself, there are also underlying issues regarding an imbalance of nutrients available in the diet of the obese person that are known to cause depression. A lack of exercise is also a factor as exercise is needed for the release of the endorphins that give us that feel good factor. Exercise is also needed to help the body to recover from the flight or flight adrenalin rush brought about by the stress in our lives.
Weight loss can help to revitalize our health and well-being. It is not unusual to experience an upsurge in energy levels. Once our bodies receive the right balance of nutrients it is not long before an improvement will be noticed. Good quality food in the right proportions is essential not just for weight loss but also for optimum health. The body, like the car is a very finely tuned mechanism that needs to be handled with care.
Far too many people assume that illness is integral with old age. Far from it, illness is purely the result of years of neglect and poor eating habits. If you lose weight and take care of your body when you are younger it will serve you well in old age and allow you to enjoy your later years to the full.
