It’s no wonder that those hoping to lose some weight around the middle get confused and overwhelmed. With infomercials featuring movies starts and medical professionals pushing the latest card dealing, juice drinking, magnetic belt wearing diet — it’s hard to know which diets can really be trusted.

The truth is that any weight loss diet that is going to succeed has to be based on sound nutrition and movement principles. Our bodies are designed to run on a proper blend of vitamins, minerals, protein and water. If we follow an extreme diet and eliminate one of these groups in favor of another, our bodies will be out of balance and will respond accordingly. Starvation diets may work in the short term, as your body reacts to being physically deprived of what it requires. However, what those diet plans do in the long run is harm your organs and bodily systems that are not receiving the nutrition needed to feed and hydrate your cells.

Diets that succeed in the long term are not diets at all, but rather “ways of living”. In order to be healthy, you need to follow certain dietary recommendations, and they should be followed for the balance of your life. The number one reasons most diets fail is because they are so ridiculously developed, that they are impossible to follow for life. Plans that make you eat nothing but meat, or juice, or salad greens are going to be hard to follow a year down the road. You may make it through six months, lose 75 pounds and look great, but what happens when you need to rejoin the real world?

Weight loss diets that depend on a method of elimination are simply starvation diets when you break them down and take a closer look. If you want real long term results with your weight loss, make smart and healthy choices that you can maintain for life.
